About Us

Meet the team

Christine Gilkes

I’m insistent about improving performance and that requires me to challenge my thinking and others to achieve that aim. My curious nature is fascinated by the question about how to uncover what drives a culture and what we can do make it more inclusive.

My expertise

With a corporate life in my toolkit, more than two decades working as an independent consultant to a vast array of organisations and a drive for learning I’ve picked up extensive skills and knowledge and had some pretty amazing experiences. My boundless energy and optimism are often contagious!

My Style

I’m a facilitator at heart and love to explore options with my clients. But don’t be fooled, as I am also a hard task master and establishing your purpose and goal achievement are critically important to me, as is delivering and getting a return on your investment.

Why gender balance is important to me

As I said my drive is to improve performance and when organisations achieve a better gender balance that is exactly what happens. Not only does it improve the bottom line but relationships, attrition, complaints and much more. Different genders think and process differently and when you harness those differences you get startling results.

A life changing moment

Leaving behind my corporate life to work with such brilliantly diverse businesses and people – It has been a real eye opener!

Karen Milner

I very much like to identify an organisation’s success measures and then work out what they can put in place to help them improve. Clients say that I really understand what makes them tick and having that external perspective is really important.

My expertise

While it is my career in HR that led me to this point, I grew into HR through an operational role and these roots in the operations of businesses drive the way that I work. My career as a consultant has taken me into a vast array of organisations from manufacturing to healthcare, giving me insight into the challenges faced by different sectors, and the opportunity to work with people from all walks of life.

My Style

I am curious about organisations and how they work, I ask a lot of questions and reflect on the best approach to working with clients, and ultimately the best solutions to drive organisations forward. I am practical and pride myself on tailored and applied next steps.

Why gender balance is important to me

For me, it’s all about organisations making the most of what they have to deliver results. We all know that better gender balance delivers better outcomes for business, so why not invest in putting the right culture, structure and opportunities in place that allow both males and females to progress and achieve.

A life changing moment

I became HR Director on a gender-balanced board; how lucky was I to get this experience? Out in the big wide world I can see that’s not the norm, but it should be! Everyone should get the level of support and development that I had and I am passionate about helping other organisations get this in place.

Testimonials

“It was great to work with balancetogether.  The value for me was their knowledge when designing the survey and then their independence when summarising the results.  They also brought a great objective view point to the discussion as we went through the results.  I look forward to working on the recommendations and furthering Alstom’s journey to full equality and inclusion.”

Charlotte Briers, Site Quality Director/Voices of Women Chair, Alstom UK & Ireland

“With diversity and inclusion already well embedded in the organisation, this additional diagnostic work allows us to finetune our D&I Roadmap and ensure agreed actions are specific and deliver value.”

Alison Knight, Head of Talent, Alstom UK & Ireland

Balancetogether provided a huge amount of insight for us, revealing a lot more for us to work on than we initially anticipated. We pride ourselves on having open communications and a supportive culture. However, balancetogether’s diagnostic really got under the skin of our organisation and encouraged employees to respond to questions that we hadn’t previously considered. We had the value of quantitative feedback from the online survey, and then qualitative feedback from the workshops and interviews that Christine and Karen did onsite. Balancetogether then supported us to arrive at practical and applied action plan, which we are now working steadily through. If you are unsure where to start on achieving better gender-balance, then I would highly recommend working with this experienced and skilled team.”

Head of People, STEM organisation

“Karen and Christine are committed to improve gender balance and inclusion in companies. It is through their work in this field that Karen was invited to join our programme as an Ambassador; the role being to support other women to succeed at work. Both Karen and Christine’s experience and knowledge are impressive and highly recommended. We are delighted to have balancetogether as part of our programme.”

Paula Grizzard, Founder She Business, Consultant Aspire2lead

“Karen and I have been partnered for just over a year in a mentoring arrangement through the Leeds Lean In Programme. As my mentor Karen has helped me greatly in suggesting ideas and ways to steer and take control of my career path. Karen has a wealth of knowledge and is a genuine caring professional. I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Karen and I have learned a great deal from her.”
