Male allyship

Male allyship is a crucial cornerstone in the quest for gender fairness

At balancetogether we see male allyship as a crucial cornerstone in the quest for gender equity. It is never our ambition to tear men down, or to give women advantages that create disadvantages for men. Our goal is simple, and that is to build a system that is fair and inclusive, and from which gender balance naturally emerges. Moving in this direction isn’t just good for women. It benefits everyone.

Male allyship is such an important cog in the wheel.

Imagine a team captain cheering on equality and fairness in life's game. That's male allyship. Their support elevates women's voices, breaks stereotypes, and fosters inclusive spaces at work and in social circles. They confront biases and inspire others to join the movement, advocating for equal opportunities and creating a stronger, more unified front for gender equity. Engaging in these discussions also leads to personal growth and a deeper understanding of diverse perspectives.

To enable the power of allyship, we must understand the role of male allies. Allies are not heroes rescuing women. Their role is to be alert to and uncover systemic biases. They are the challengers that call out biased behaviours. They are the advocates and pioneers of change. Imagine them as social scientists come detectives, observing, challenging assumptions, asking questions, examining data and testing hypotheses. When a male ally hears someone say that a woman is unfit for a role, their role is to challenge the root of that assumption, investigate where else it occurs and initiate change. They advocate for fairer systems, some big some small and opportunistic, like pointing out when a female colleague is interrupted in a meeting and invite her to finish sharing her idea.

Together we must change the norms and overcome the marginalisation that women continue to experience.

In essence, male allyship is a powerful force, pivotal in building a fairer world for everyone.
