Yorkshire Day 2023

Yorkshire Day - You may know that today is Yorkshire Day, but did you know that the 1st of August was chosen because this is when the slavery abolition act 1833 was passed? William Wilberforce of Hull East Yorkshire, then MP for Yorkshire, campaigned for emancipation.

There are too many amazing Yorkshire ladies to list, but here are a few of our favourites:

  • Amy Johnson Yorkshire's 'Flying Queen'
  • The Bronte sisters Yorkshire's 'Ground breaking authors compelled to write under male pen names'
  • Anne Lister, Yorkshire's 'First modern-day lesbian'
  • Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill Yorkshire's 'London Olympic heroine
    and role model'
  • Dame Judi Dench Yorkshire's 'Oscar winner and acclaimed actor on stage and screen and honoured with the Freedom of the City of York'.

Just a few miles from Beverley, East Yorkshire, where Yorkshire Day was first celebrated in 1975, balancetogether founders marked the occasion in a rainy Yorkshire garden. Karen Milner, born in West Yorkshire and now living in North Yorkshire, and Christine Gilkes born in 'a secret southern location', and adopted by Yorkshire in 1996, are both proud to call Yorkshire their home and business location.
